As we age, wrinkles begin to line our once-smooth face. The natural, physical display of our emotions, such as laughter and frowns, leave their stamp around our lips and eyes. Though some companies offer creams that claim to lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles, physician-administered treatment is the only way to effect real change in moderate to severe lines, especially that tough spot between the brows. The injection of Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®) can relax facial furrows caused over time by natural muscle movement.
BOTOX® has proven popular with patients, as the treatment is simple, quick and nonsurgical, and you can often see a difference after only a few days. However, the effects are not permanent; you will have to return for treatment after a few months. How often you must go back depends on factors such as skin elasticity, age and treatment site.
A few drops of BOTOX® are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that creates the wrinkle. The BOTOX® immediately works to block nerve impulses from reaching that muscle. As the muscle weakens, the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles gradually soften and often times disappear completely. This effect usually occurs within 3-7 days from the day of treatment.
The most common areas for the use of BOTOX® are:
Crows feet around the eyes
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Horizontal lines on the forehead
BOTOX® is produced by the global pharmaceutical company Allergan. Generally, the effects of a BOTOX® treatment typically last between 3 to 5 months. After several treatments, the effects may begin to last longer, generally in the 6-8 month range.
Regarding preparation for a BOTOX® treatment, we recommend avoiding alcoholic beverages, anti-inflammatory medications, vitamin E and aspirin for one week prior to and for one week after treatment. For best results, we also recommend that the client not lie down for 3-4 hours following the treatment.
